Samsung officially announced the GearVR headset, an Oculus Rift like device that you could mount on your head and experience immersive gaming, movies among other entertainment stuff.
The company’s vice president made the announcement during the Oculus Connect virtual reality conference. The GearVR headset will be compatible with every Samsung phone that was launched in the year 2015. Compared to the previous model, the new headset is at least 22 percent lighter and is expected to have a more comfortable finish when worn for extended hours.
For those of you who are curious to know about the apps and games that will land on the device, the company has announced that it will launch Netflix, Hulu, Vimo and TiVo for the headset. The apps will not be immediately available on launch but is expected to be rolled out sequentially in the next few months.
Out of the lot, the Oculus Arcade is the most interesting of them all. It is a simple app that allows people to enjoy retro games like Pac Man, Sonic, Spy Hunter and Gauntlet among many other titles using the Samsung GearVR headset. It will house games from Bandai Namco, Sega and Midway making it a nostalgic gamer’s dream come true.
During the event, the company also showcased Twitch running on it. It will allow gamers to view events live and watching first person shooters might be exceedingly immersive in a virtual reality headset. We don’t expect the new GearVR to beat the full-fledged Oculus Rift or Playstation 4’s VR earlier known as Morpheus. But, at $99, if it could deliver a combined virtual reality experience, it just might be worth the shot.
Take a peak at some of the images released by Samsung which should give you a clear idea of how the device would look like. The Samsung GearVR is being built by the team at Oculus and has a dedicated Xbox One styled controlled designed by Steelseries.
